Korea Shares Its Plant Conservation Strategy with the International Community

The Korea National Arboretum (KNA), under the Korea Forest Service (KFS), has published an English version of the Korea Strategy for Plant Conservation 2030 (KSPC 2030) and shared it with the international community. KSPC 2030 is a national strategy designed to strengthen the conservation and sustainable use of plant diversity.

KSPC 2030 was developed in alignment with the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

Following the adoption of the GSPC in 2002, the KNA established the KSPC as a national-level strategy to support its implementation. Since then, the strategy has undergone two revisions, helping to strengthen Korea's policy framework for plant conservation. KSPC 2030 builds on Korea's policy experience and implementation achievements, and aims to share these lessons internationally while contributing more actively to the implementation of the GSPC.

The strategy was formulated in consultation with relevant ministries, plant conservation experts, and field practitioners. It presents 21 strategic tasks under three main pillars: (i) conservation and restoration of plant diversity; (ii) sustainable use of plant resources; and (iii) strengthening the knowledge base, enhancing participation, and establishing an effective policy implementation framework. KSPC 2030 is also designed to be implemented in line with Korea's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP).

The English version of KSPC 2030 is available on the websites of the KNA and Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) (www.bgci.org).
