The 29th General Assembly and Workshop of the Korean Biodiversity Consortium Held

The 29th General Assembly and Workshop was held on April 22 and 23 at the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea. The event brought together 80 heads and staff from 27 member institutions of the Consortium, including the National Science Museum, Korea National Arboretum, National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Mungyeong Natural Ecology Museum, and Natural History Museum of Ewha Womans University to explore strategies for knowledge sharing and cooperation.

The meeting was presided over by Dr. Lee Changsuk, Director of National Institute of Ecology and Chair of the Korean Biodiversity Consortium. It began with a report on 2024 operational performance of the Korean Biodiversity Information Facility (KBIF)1), the national node for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)2).

Following the report, the Consortium deliberated and resolved five agenda including registration of new member institutions and expansion of awards for contributors to the promotion of bio-resources information.

In addition, three key topics were discussed including the implementation of joint academic research on climate change, establishment and operation of a GBIF network of Korean institutions sharing biodiversity data, and public outreach and engagement for the Consortium's joint biodiversity research.

Launched in 2007 with 16 institutions, the Consortium has grown into a nationwide network of 64 institutions. It has been monitoring biodiversity changes every decade by holding an annual joint biodiversity research across 10 regional zones.

Collected data are publicly accessible through the Korean Natural History Research Information System (NARIS)3) (https://naris.science.go.kr) and the GBIF portal (https://www.gbif.org).

Notably, outstanding research outcomes are published in the Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity (JAPB) co-published by the National Science Museum and the Korea National Arboretum, contributing to academic exchange at home and abroad.

1) Korean Biodiversity Information Facility (KBIF): The national node responsible for fulfilling Korea's obligations to GBIF, operated by the National Science Museum. KBIF manages a network of 64 biodiversity-related institutions in Korea to promote biodiversity data discovery, management, and utilization.

2) Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF): An intergovernmental organization initiated by the OECD to promote open access to biodiversity data worldwide. Currently, 106 countries and institutions participate and Republic of Korea joined as a full member in 2001, represented by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

3) Korean Natural History Research Information System (NARIS): A system that consolidates and integrates existing natural history data from science museums, universities, and other institutions across Korea into a unified database, providing public access to the information.
