Overview

A total of 394 wildlife protection areas (909.43㎢) have been designated in Korea.

What is the Wildlife Protection Areas?

  • Areas of the group habitats or breeding places of the endangered wild species that require a special protection
  • Areas of the group arriving places of the endangered wild species that require a special protection due to high values in academic studies and preservation
  • Areas of the habitats of the endangered wild species that require a special protection due to concerns about destruction or extinction of the species

Designation status of the Wildlife Protection Special Areas

  • Designation basis: Paragraph 1 of Article 27 of the「Wildlife Protection Act」
    • ※ The areas shall be designated by the Minister of Environment to protect the habitats of the endangered wildlife (otters).
  • Designation status: 1 places in the neighborhood of the Jinyang lake, about 26.2㎢

Designation status of the Wildlife Protection Areas

  • Designation basis: Article 33 of the 「Wildlife Protection Act」
    • ※ The areas shall be designated by mayors/governors and head of cities/counties to protect the endangered wildlife.
  • Designation procedures: Investigating the candidate areas -> Preparing the designation proposals -> Collecting opinions from the parties in interests and the related government agencies (holding the presentation conferences if necessary) -> Designation/Notice
  • Designation status: 394 places in 14 cities and provinces, 909.43㎢
